Biodynamic Wine

What is Biodynamics ?

Biodynamics is above all a philosophy according to which the earth is a whole and is part of a whole. This founding current of organic agriculture was developed at the beginning of the 20th century in reaction against the introduction of chemical fertilizers and the intensification of production techniques. We speak of an agriculture that takes care of the earth and adapts its rhythm to the rhythm of nature.

In concrete terms, it is a method of agricultural production that respects the basic principles of organic agriculture. But biodynamics goes further than organic agriculture since it integrates a holistic approach to agriculture in order to take into account the environment and the link between the earth and what is cultivated there.

Thus, biodynamic agriculture differs from organic agriculture by the use of specific preparations for the soil, the plants and the compost, by taking into account the notion of the farm which is assimilated to a living and whole organism. It also takes into account the influence of the rhythms of the moon and the planets. The goal of these practices is to create a link between the soil, the plants and the animal world in order to restore the unity of the ecosystems by stimulating exchanges between the different levels.

Why produce biodynamic wine?

The main reason for our switch to biodynamic viticulture is the search for identity of the terroir and a greater coherence with our environmental values. We wish to work our terroir as naturally, healthily and respectfully as possible with the organization of the living. It is also a search for excellence by improving the quality of the wines. Strengthening the vine will obviously have an effect on the wine we produce. Biodynamic wine is becoming more and more popular today. Notably because it is a wine that can fully express the qualities and the typicity of its terroir.

At Château Malherbe we believe that today producing organic wine is no longer enough    from an ecological ou environmental point of view.

Indeed, the climate of Provence is not conducive to the development of vine diseases and the management of an organic vineyard in this region is very easy.

A biodynamic vineyard better reflects the commitment and vision of the people who constitute it. The vineyard is not a thing but a living organism that must be kept alive. It is necessary to find a balance between profitability and respect for the living.

What certifications for our biodynamic wine?

There are different labels for biodynamic wine, the most well known and the one we have chosen is Demeter. This label guarantees to the consumers biodynamic grapes and wines certified according to demanding and transparent specifications. Annual controls are carried out on the vineyard to ensure the good respect of the biodynamic methods. The labeling of the bottles is also monitored to ensure the accuracy of the information given to consumers.

Obtaining Demeter certification is part of the company's desire to be as healthy and sustainable as possible. It also allows us to respond to the challenges of global warming by adapting to the needs of the farm and by perpetuating the vineyard, the soil and the ecosystem.
